Using the Security Scanner Tool

3 views Updated 3 days ago

The Security Scanner is a free tool that lets you check any URL for potential security threats. It uses multiple threat intelligence services to provide a comprehensive safety assessment.

How to Use It

  1. Navigate to Tools → Security Scanner from the main menu
  2. Enter the URL you want to scan
  3. Click "Scan URL"
  4. Review the results

What It Checks

The scanner checks your URL against multiple threat databases:

Google Safe Browsing

  • Social engineering (phishing) attempts
  • Malware distribution
  • Unwanted software
  • Known malicious URLs

VirusTotal

  • Scans against 70+ antivirus engines
  • Detects malicious, suspicious, or clean status
  • Shows detection ratio (e.g., 3/72 engines flagged)

Understanding Results

  • Clean — No threats detected by any service
  • Suspicious — Some indicators of concern, worth investigating
  • Malicious — Active threats detected, avoid visiting the URL
  • Pending — Scan is still processing (VirusTotal may take a moment)

Automatic Scanning on Monitors

In addition to manual scanning, WebMon automatically runs content security scans on all your HTTP monitors. These scans check for 8 threat categories on every check cycle, including:

  • Google blacklist indicators
  • Known hack signatures
  • Phishing page patterns
  • Malware injection indicators
  • SEO spam detection

You can view content scan results on each monitor's detail page under the Security tab.
